KAAP220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Sternum, Patella, Glenoid Labrum
Document Summary
Group of cells specialized to perform a function. Histology the study of tissues: epithelial covering, connective support, muscle movement, nervous control. Functions: covers body surfaces and body cavities, specialized to produce and secrete various substances, secretions go into ducts or directly into body fluids, protections- shield for underlying tissues, absorption, filtration, excretion, surface transport, sensory functions. Ciliated cells move mucous in respiratory track. Intercellular junctions: tight junctions, protein molecules fuse together, obliterate intercellular space, forms impermeable junction (zipper, desmosomes, act like rivets b, very strong. Interlocking cytoskeletons: gap junctions, connect by hollow cylinders, called connexons, pass small molecules and electrical excitation. Gland = 1+ glandular epithelium cells: produce secretion, usually columnar or cuboidal. Endocrine glands: ductless glands, secrete products directly into extracellular space, products = hormones, circulated in blood or lymph. Exocrine glands: secrete products into ducts, ducts open onto some internal or external surface, ex: sweat & oil glands. Functions: binding, support, protection, insulation, transportation.
