Document Summary

Makes adjustments to ensure optimal support for body activities. Effectors: sns skeletal muscle, ans cardiac, smooth, glands. Efferent pathways: heavily myelinated axons of somatic motor neurons extend from cns to effector: sns thick heavily myelinated somatic motor fiber, ans 2 neuron chain. Ganglionic (2nd) unmyelinated, postganglionic extends to effector organ. Spinal cord segments t1-l2, lateral horns of spinal cord. Preganglionic fibers pass thru white rami communicants: motor output on ventral root. Postganglionic fibers innervate the numerous organs of the body. Synapse = paravertebral chain ganglia, usually 23: preganglionic. Synapse with ganglionic neuron in same ganglion. Ascend or descend to synapse in another chain ganglion. Pass though and emerge w/out synapsing: postganglionic. Enter ventral rami via gray rami communicants. The following cranial nerves have preganglionic parasympathetic motor fibers in them: Oculomotor ps motor fibers to smooth muscles of the pupil/lens. Facial ps motor fibers to lacrimal (tear) glands, 2/3 salivary glands, nasal glands.
