Document Summary

Tides are slow up and down movements of the sea level once or twice a day. Have a wave form, but are not wind waves. Caused by interactions of the ocean, sun, moon. Are rhythmic variations of sea level with periods of about 6 or 12 hours, depending on where you are on earth. Are very long waves (up to circumference of earth) Move in response to the forces exerted by the sun and moon. Progress toward the coastlines where the sea surface regularly rises and falls. Vertical difference between high and low tides called tidal range. Tidal period of time between consecutive high or low tides and varies between 12 hrs 25 mins, to 24 hrs 50 mins. Wavelength of an average tide can be up to 17,000 km. Shallow water waves have a depth less than 1/20 wavelength and deepwater waves have a depth greater than 1/2.
