MUSC313 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: String Quartet No. 13 (Beethoven), Fugue, Counterpoint
Document Summary
Famous thing that he stopped writing after the middle period. Time of a lot of retrenchment after napoleon. Napoleon died in 1815 and europe pretty much ignored everything that just happened and restored monarchies. Bae hated this and kinda boycotted writing. When he returns from his break his style is rejuvenated. Unfolding of the story - protagonist v. antagonist. Not a literal story (19th century style includes actual stories in music) A narrative - shape of a story (perseverance) Real late beethoven - he didn"t try to please anyone besides himself. Not really performed because the pieces were too weird. Wanted to end it with a fugue (grossa fugue) Consistent playing vs a lot of breaks. Smooth melodic material vs sharp melody; fugal edginess. 130 has 15 minutes of just continuous fugal counterpoint. A lot of stops and disjointed stuff. Late baethoven is a revolt that made him so great. The late style does not conquer - it gets messy.
