NTDT401 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Glutathione Disulfide, Duodenum, Glutathione
Document Summary
60 years~ knowledge low intake associated with cancer peroxidase/glutathione. 50% absorption at duodenum transported by protein rich mechanism (selenocystine plasma protein) ecreted in urine and lungs. Looh not as good compared to loh (loh is more stable) Selenium is cofactor for gsh peroxidase enzyme that reduces glutathione to repair things (go against oxygen species); deal with hydroxy radicals by converting to water and lipids) Glutathione reductase ; used with nadph based on riboflavin (fad) Iodine function makes t3, t4 thyroid hormones ; stimulates metabolism and growth. Lack of t3, t4 cells are inactive and cannot grow (3, 4 stand for how many iodine are in hormones t3 more active) Convert t4 to t3, use less iodine and make more active hormone good when lacking iodine. To convert t4 to t3, relies on selenium dependents enzyme deiodinase. Without selenium; iodine deficiencies get worse because cant convert t4 to t3.
