Voting and elections iii/ media i (march 21, 2016) The process: each state elects elections, electors choose president in the college, need the majority votes to get in. Almost all states use winner-take-all : except for maine and nebraska, has biggest impact on campaign. So they focus on the swing states. People think the media is biased and generally more liberal: journalists are generally more liberal but news stations are not. Public: 20% d/ 41% m/ 33% r: news actually generally more conservative, gives attention to both sides, and the ones that are slanted, have plenty for the other side as well. Political economy of news media: modern media: privately owned corporations. The point is to make a profit. News and ads can make more money if more people watch. Commercial bias due to thin need for viewers. Ratings increase, profit increases: consequences of commercial bias. When they do cover politics its usually just about conflict and image.
