*good way to distinguish theories is role of morals. Not a lot of morals in realism. When dealing w foreign affairs, hard to be moral. Made prominent again by the experience of the two world wars, failure of idealism . If you want peace, prepare for war . Anarchy, sovereign states, balance of power, human nature. Sovereign states are the actors-- balance of power relevant so that no one country can dominate the others. Human nature-- people will fight each other. Thought process is that they can only be the most powerful, everyone else is below. The state is the supreme good; there is no community beyond borders. Suicide bombers-- think they"re helping w/ security as martyrs. ***remember the security dilemma-- spiral of insecurity (everyone starts watching each other, very aware of what others know/do not know)*** No state can depend on others for its security. The strong must do what they will, the weak suffer what they must .
