Objectivity requires the complete absence of subjectivity, the complete bracketing of any- thing our minds themselves contribute. Journalists see irony, but often feel helpless: fairness , balance , accuracy , history technology: what began as a technique value. How: important details, other general info/background info. This format began during wire transmission news in wartime and they were worried about failing technology so wanted to get the most important news first. Now it is a norm for the biggest stories to appear first. A case study: vietnam: first tv war , 1965: report by morley safer, 1968: tet offensive, if i"ve lost walter conkrite i"ve lost middle america . This was the first war that television news covered. Military restriction: judges often side with government. Vietnam: bureaus, multiple correspondents, relatively free access. Post-vietnam: grenada and media pools, official briefings media not permitted near conflict and often times no q&a, military/gov"t is very particular/careful about what they tell journalists.
