Selective perception: perception process of categorizing and interpreting information, selective perception process of doing the same thing in a way that favors one interpretation over another; bias in information processing. Ex: football game viewers perceive their team as least aggressive. All in the family archie bunker prejudice people agreed, people who were not found it as a satire: perceive information in ways that are consistent with opinions/ways. Reality is not absolute we live in a social reality that is constructed based on where we live/who we are/where we come from. Belief that we are immune while others are susceptible: age (higher), education (higher), media use (lower) Why: optimistic bias, if [people] define situation as real, they"re real in their consequences . What often maters more is not how we are swayed, often matters more how we believe we are being affected. Media seen as biased against one"s own perspective. Defensive processing mechanism: highly involved they will perceive it differently.
