Body dysmorphic disorder was a somatoform disorder. Hoarding was thought to be a variant of ocd. Obsessive-compulsive disorder: 2 components: obsessions and/or compulsions - do not need both for ocd but most of the time they are both present. Causes great distress, consumes a considerable amount of time, and/or interferes with daily functions: specify if: with good or fair insight (realizes beliefs are irrational), with poor insight (in between), with absent insight/delusional beliefs (lost connection from reality). Obsessions - recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or images. Compulsions - repetitive behaviors or mental acts. Aimed at preventing or reducing anxiety or distress, or preventing some dreaded event or situation. Themes: fear of germs, common obsession of hurting others or oneself, need for order and symmetry, obsessive doubt (forgetting to do something), unwanted inappropriate thoughts/ images, religious obsessions. Etiology: overactive orbitofrontal cortex, cingulate gyrus, and caudate nucleus. Several pathways of neurotransmitters are affected, particularly serotonin circuits (serotonin is important).
