(cid:863) Not all men opposed the bicycle, however: henry ward beecher started to take up the exercise of sunday cycling. The bicycle was the subject of not only religious but also medical dispute: the antibicylists said that the cycle path led straight to the hospital or the grave. It also cured diseases though, like rheumatism, indigestion, alcoholism, anaemia, gout, liver trouble, and nerves.
