Women and personal empowerment- war provides opportunity for this. Wwi and women in the west: working on farms or factory, raises status of women after war. As total war became more elaborate, all segments of society were increasingly seen as legitimate targets for the combatants. Be cheerful : women: keepers of morale, cheery word and a smile, serene and calm confidence. Suggests women be pure and gentle, straight and true. Women"s roles in wwi: women have new roles in the factory and world is viewed with a lot of suspicion, fear of their sexuality. Causes resentment because people are mad women are getting paid for nothing : take care of those left behind, new scrutiny for women. Abstract defense of women: wives, daughters, grandmothers. Avenge actual women: the raid of scarborough (december 16,1914, germans attack this city with submarines which was seen as fighting dirty, women are murdered during this raid as well as held hostage.
