Sacred text -> interpretation -> leadership -> institutionalization. There is a general agreement that islam is in a state of crisis. Modernists: distinguish pristine original faith from the later manifestations of islam, acculturation was damaging, advocate the individual interpretation of scripture. Apply the original value system to the modern world: women(cid:859)s liberation is considered to be a precondition for a virtuous society, the first female believers are an example of a modern, independent woman. Islam is an inherited balance system of faith and action, based on and sanctioned by scripture and its interpretation: with this inheritance comes a variety of cultural customs and insights. Interpretation of scripture is conducted through the verifying authority of community consensus: the inherited past tradition asserts women(cid:859)s inequality with men, the first female believers are exceptional, not to serve as example. Rather support that women should be strong and active within their prescribed limits.
