Women expected to prepare & maintain tradiional ancestral rituals- ancestor worship central to neo- Confucian households (sacriices had to be made for all male family members). Abbesses- were efecive fundraisers and builders or restorers of temples who won the patronage of lay devotees, many from wealthy families who provided them with generous inancial support. Abbesses served as ritual experts and healers gave services to laymen and women and to the country, dedicaing prayers and ritual aciviies to longevity of emperor.
