Social structure: the organizations of society that shape social behavior: abstract concept focusing on collective behavior and social basis of behavior rather than individual motivations and actions, social structures shape individual and group choices, opportunities, experiences, etc. Social structures: gender, race, class are all elements, some social groups benefit from social structures v. Shape/maintain/facilitate different forms of gender violence: structural analysis i. ii. iii. iv. Looks at how social institutions interact with social roles and culture. Social institutions include the family, government, economy, workplace, religion, educational system, etc. Looks at how violence is expressed in various institutions. Engels provides a framework: marx and engels look at economic relations and the process by which humans create social structures ii. iii. In communal societies, the division of labor between the sexes was reciprocal and the woman and her children were not dependant on the man: capitalism institutions put power into the hands of a few select men.
