AMH 2020 Lecture Notes - Emancipation Proclamation, Thaddeus Stevens
Document Summary
Freedom for the slaves following the civil war turned out to be much different from what many of slaves had always envisioned it to be. The reality of the situation of freedom for the slaves had many limitations that didn"t really constitute freedom at all. Proclamation was indoctrinated it did not necessarily free the entire slave population. As a result, many slaves began to free themselves through self-emancipation. When union armies began to come into the south many of the slaves saw this as an opportunity for freedom. The slaves would follow the union army anywhere they would go as a way to solidify their freedom. When president abraham lincoln was assassinated in 1865 his vice president andrew. President johnson main premise during this time was to try and covert things back to the way they were by creating limitations through black codes. The black codes ultimately laid out the status and rights blacks had.
