ANS 3006C Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Ad Libitum, Dietary Energy Supply, Carbon
Document Summary
Nutrition: the study of how the body uses nutrients in feed to sustain life and for productive purposes, the study of how an animal consumes, digests, absorbs, transports, metabolizes, and excretes nutrients. Why do we care about nutrition: the cost of feeding can account for 45-75% of the total cost of livestock production. What is affected by nutrition: general health and wellbeing, physical abilities, susceptibility to disease, ability to recover from disease. Any chemical element or compound in the diet that supports normal reproduction, growth, lactation, or the maintenance of life processes. Dietary nonessentials: nutrients that do not have to be part of the diet. Dietary essentials: must be present in the diet. Macronutrients vs micronutrients: macronutrients are needed in an abundance in the diet, micronutrients are needed in small amounts in the diet. Should be provided ad libitum: free choice. Water should be clean and cool in the summer and warm in the winter to encourage adequate consumption.
