ANS 3006C Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Estrous Cycle, Mate Choice, Sickness Behavior
Document Summary
To learn about relationships between animals and their environment: helps us understand how to design artificial or controlled environments for the nest welfare and behaviors. The scientific study of what animals do. Categories of behavior: feeding, social, maternal, sexual and reproductive, abnormal. Describes all aspects of how an animal searches for, selects, and digests food. How does feeding behavior in captivity differ from that in a natural environment: stomach ulcers are becoming seen more often in horses who eat two large meals rather than naturally grazing throughout the day. Health problems are created by nutrient-rich diets: obesity, changes in feeding behaviors. Describes all types of active association between members of a groups. Affiliative behavior: positive social interaction, examples: playing, grooming. Agonistic behavior: negative social interaction, examples: fighting, aggression. Livestock is often housed together so social behavior is important to look at and consider.
