The university of florida is a land grant institution. Land grant university system: created by the morrill act of 1862, founded by justin smith morrill, the act was formed in response to a call for more agricultural colleges. Jonathan baldwin turner: land grant schools were wanted to teach agriculture and mechanics, the original bill was submitted in 1857, but was vetoed by buchanan. Resubmitted in 1861, and changed to include the teaching of military tactics: the act allocated each eligible state 30,000 acres of federal land for each congressman that that state had. The total amount of land varied per state: it was the responsibility of the state to provide funds and academic buildings, interesting facts: States that ceded from the union during the civil war were not eligible for the grant. States that did not have enough land in their own state could be allocated land in other states.
