Humans use culture to survive by adapting to their environment and interacting with plants, animals, and other people. The material record (stuff they left behind) Social structure (social and political organization, kinship, power relations) Humans, environment, and culture co-evolve together and co-determine each other. Society must balance the needs of the collective, and the needs and desires of the individuals: rules!
