Chapter 3, Part 7
Cell Metabolism
Oxidative phosphorylation
o ETC and chemiosmotic coupling
o How many ATP are produced?
Pumps push H from mitochondrial matrix up into intermembrane space
First pump (complex I) = 4 H+ for every pair of e- that are delivered to the
ETC
Second pump (complex III) = 4 H+
Third pump (complex IV) = 2 H+
4 H+ are required to produce and transport 1 ATP
NADH (delivers 2 e-, pump across 10 H+) = 2.5 ATP
FADH2 (delivers 2 e-, pumps across 6 H+ because it delivers e- to
second pump, not first) = 1.5 ATP
For every 1 glucose molecule aerobic metabolism generates 32 ATP
Estimating BMR
o For each molecule of glucose that undergoes ox-phos ATP, about 6O2 are
consumed
o Look at amount of oxygen is consumed (oxygen is final e- acceptor in ETC)
Measure the amt of oxygen they’re breathing out compared to amt of O in
the air
Environmental air is about 21% O2
Pyruvate lactic acid
o The rate at which oxygen must be supplied depends on how fast tissues are
consuming it (metabolic demand)
