BSC 2011 Lecture 23: BSC2011 Animals (all)
Document Summary
Chapter 29 fundamentals of animal function (book sections 29. 1, 29. 3, 29. 4. and 29. 6: medicine and physiology are tightly linked. Students should understand that diagnosing and treating diseases requires a deep understanding of how animals work. Students should know that one of the nobel prizes are for physiology or medicine : animals are open and dynamic systems. Students should be able to apply the first and second laws of thermodynamics to animals: first law of thermodynamics- conservation of energy- the total amount of energy in an isolated system remains constant. Energy can change form, but it cannot be created or destroyed: second law of thermodynamics- closed systems move toward increasing entropy (disorder, animal system is very orderly, open, and dynamic (things are moving in and out each day). They are highly ordered but they require a constant supply of energy to maintain order.
