BSC 2011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Ejaculation, Oocyte, External Fertilization
Document Summary
Budding: a new individual forms as an outgrowth from the bodies of older animals, an offspring branches off from the parent, product of mitosis, offspring is genetically identical to the parent, example: hydra. Fission: an individual splits into two or more pieces that grow into new individuals, product of mitosis, two individuals are genetically identical, no real parent individual, example: starfish. Parthenogenesis: the development of offspring from unfertilized eggs, also (cid:272)alled (cid:862)virgin (cid:271)irth(cid:863, formshaploid eggs that fuse to produce a diploid zygote, seen mostly in lizards. Also seen in some fish and sharks. The normal form of reproduction in most vertebrates and many invertebrates. Anisogamy: unequal sized gametes, males produce sperm which are small and not energetically expensive to produce, females produce eggs which are larger and more energetically expensive to produce. Who produces eggs vs. sperm: gonochores. Each with either male or female gonads. Individual either produces eggs or sperm: hermaphrodites. One individual can produce both types of gametes.
