Zubin Kapadia January 9 , 2013 Cultural Context of Classical Myth  Ancient Greece had city-states. Not one unified country. Ancient Greece is a region.  Ancient Greece had many mountains that led to pockets of fertile land. o Filled with sheep. o Water was seasonal via rivers.  Greece was surrounded by many other cultures. o South of Ancient Greece was Egypt. o To the East was the “Near East”. Time Periods  Early/Middle Bronze Age (3000-1600 BCE): The Origin of the Greeks o Bronze = Main metal used during this time period. o Crete – i.e. Minoan Civilization Palace at Knossos  Lots of Bull Imagery  Late Bronze Age (Mycenaean Age) (1600-1150 BCE) o Trojan War takes place? o Mycenae ruled by King Agamemnon maybe? o Mycenae had a language called “Linear B” (Greek).  Language was used strictly for record keeping.  The Dark Age (1150-800 BCE) o Flourishing and rich civilizations.
