Definition: discontinuation (cessation) of reinforcement for a behavior, leading to a decrease in its frequency. Do not deliver sr+ (when it is absent) Extinction involves not delivering the behavior, do nothing, don"t deliver reinforcer . Example: you are speaking with a patient, who mentions that she is receiving a voice transmission from her deceased grandmother. Example: a child hits the teacher while telling him to do work. Do not delay presentation of stimulation (prevent avoidance) Example: a child feigns sickness at home as the school bus arrives. Disruptive kid in class and teacher ignores it. Modify source of stimulation so that r does not produce it. Example: child continually flips light switch on and off. Modify some feature of r so it no longer produces sr. It will have 0 effect on the behavior. Ext burst: temporary increase in some aspect of r during initial phase of extinction (keep pressing buttons on a broken vending machine)
