How to approach gender inequality: post-modern. Suspicion over the role of ideology in maintained political and economic power. Meaning not xed but in ux: psychoanalytic theory. A literary or cultural work is always structured by the complex and often contradictory human desires. By analyzing the formation of the individual, however, psychoanalysis also helps us to understand. The formation of ideology at large and can therefore be extended to the analysis of various cultural and societal phenomena. The focus is not ultimately on the individual body that of the anorexic, obese, or bulimic but on reading the social body: the culture that propagates the ideal of slenderness.
