Thinking about the good life, part 2: the good life and the purposes of college. Rousseau: says most people take their opinions of themselves based on how they are viewed by others. Civilized men in commercial society sell themselves to be approved of. If you cant define an internal compass, you will base you success off of societal standards. Importance of college. o: self discovery: perhaps you don"t know for sure who you are throughout life. Life constant self discovery. path can be meandering and unique to you. In order to do the right thing for you; you must o: career: there is mostly little direct correlation between major and career. Be focused on developing the skillsets that can be moved between different careers o: contributing to the world: job vs. vocation,: contributing to something beyond self provides greatest fullfillment. Blindly choosing a job that you hate, could mean that 5/7 of your life is annoying.
