Carrie buck: given up for adoption to foster parents as an infant, at 17 she was raped by the nephew of her foster parents. o sent away by parents to an insane asylum, called feeble minded . Promiscuous after she gave birth she was forcibly sterilized baby given back to foster family: groups argued against what happened and sued the state, went up to the supreme court. Eugenics side argued it was necessary for the protection of the general public, protect it from birth of degenerate people: because of buck vs bell 65,000 people (mostly women) sterilized,until laws repealed. Humans have always told stories, developed religions, and folklore to describe who we are. in 18-19th century science begins to rise as an objective alternative. Eugenics: the idea that we can create better humans by studying and selecting certain genes. Mendel: father of genetics, darwin: natural selection, adaptation.
