How might theories of ir be reformulated and their understandings of global politics improved if : gender were included as a category or analysis, women"s experiences were a part of its subject. Less than ten percent of the world"s heads of state are women. Women are not a majority of parliament in any country in the world. Most women speak from the margins of international politics. Security and economic crises a ect women disproportionately. A set of socially constructed characteristics describing what men and women ought to be. Men ought to be strong, rational, independent, protecting, and in public life. Women ought to be weak, emotional, relational, protected, and private. These characteristics do not translate onto all men and women. These characteristics vary over time and space, but are importantly relational. Masculine characteristics are generally valued more than feminine characteristics creating gender subordination.
