What types of controversial stories might the media cover: capital punishment, immigration, universal health care, legalization of drugs, search & seizure, nuclear & oil power (energy resources) Why not: advantages, it"s the public"s right to know, it"s newsworthy, its an issue that may need clarifying/more explanation, what do you risk, being biased, offending the audience, cancelled subscriptions, loss of. Where does your opinion fit in: it doesn"t. Tips for covering these issues: keep your eye on the ball. Cover one controversy at a time: identify sources based on pov. Represent the extremes: get to the heart of the issue. Your story is only as good as your interviews. It"s your job to get through the double talk and niceties.
