Ot deals with the eyes and the areas around the eyes. Ot is a heavy subspecialty because there are specialists for every part of eye. Majority do cataract surgery and refractive surgery. Cataract surgery is usually done on older people and helps to improve their vision by removing cataracts. Refractive surgery is more for young patients to get rid of glasses. Surgery done with subspecialties: cornea, transplants, retina, detachments, glaucoma surgery. 1 year of internal medicine 3 years of (ot) career practices: Surgical and medical subspecialty, so it"s split between the or and the clinic. 3 or 4 times in the office, 1 or 2 times in surgery. Subspecialties and academics are on call more than private practice and have longer hours. Research is taking off because there"s a lot of therapies available because the eye is so accessible: gene therapy, stem cell transportation, artificial structures that can replace structures in the eye.
