Harry harlow"s work w. rhesus monkeys showed otherwise in context of strange situation, refers to how infants react when separated. Behaviorists assumed children bond w those who provide them nourishment. 4 categories of behavior: secure attachment, 60 percent infant checks w. mother then explores rooms/toys freely insecure avoidant attachment, 15 to 20 percent infant doesn"t check w. mother, explores room independently insecure anxious attachment, disorganized attachment inconsistent. Lack of reliability on strange situation: changing styles over brief times, diff. styles for mom vs dad, 40 percent of infants. May not matter as much as one thought: as long as an avg expectable environment is provided. Matter most if they are toxic or child is genetically predisposed toward impulsivity or violent behavior. Most children come out of divorce: without long term emotional damage.
