Video 1- psychological disorders: psychological disorder- condition in which a person"s thoughts, feelings, or behavior is judged to be dysfunctional. Person experiences significant pain, mania, or delusions. Source of the problem resides in the person. Not a deliberate reaction to factors (poverty, government policy, other conflicts with society: a disorder is not enough for a behavior or set of behaviors to be deviant from mainstream culture. Being different does not qualify as abnormal: models of abnormality. Medical- biological conditions that can be treated through medical intervention. Psychological- mental disorders can be caused and maintained by one"s life experiences. Death of mom before the age of 7 doubles a child"s risk of depression. Different cultures react to troubles in different ways (american teens do drugs, thailand teens sulk and sleep a lot: diagnosis- indentifying and grouping the mental disorder with similar symptoms.
