CCJ 4934 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Panel Data, Differential Association
Document Summary
Trait based models focused on population heterogeneity: argues that a high degree of relative stability exists as a result of personal traits and genetics, propensity of poor behavior causing relative stability. State dependence- cumulative disadvantage: accumulation of negative experiences through criminal behavior, neurological deficits that differentiate life course persisters from adolescent limited criminals, verbal iq- on average 10 points below normal; trait based factor. Interactions with different groups leads to cumulative disadvantage- maintains pathway on trajectory of high risk crime. Strong positive correlation between past and future offending, aggression and antisocial behavior. Study designs: cross sectional method, longitudinal data treated like cross sectional to examine correlation, limited because does not show self-compared change over time, can only show ranking relative to others. Longitudinal: prospective and retrospective, variation necessary to examine different pathways of offending. Sutherland was biggest figure of alc due to differential association.
