Statistics is a branch of applied math with principles and methodology for designing the processes of data collection summarizing and interpreting data and drawing conclusions. Statistics are numbers that represent facts or describe some characteristics of a sample (proportions; odds, averages) Bios is the branch of statistics that applies statistical methods to topics in medicine, biology, and health. Drug approval: the fda requires positive results from a clinical trial before approving new drugs. Measurement- how we get our data; positioning observations along a numerical continuum: (example: determining a person"s age, weight height) Individuals- units of observation; the objects described by a set of data: (example: people, animal, thing) Variables- any characteristic of an individual; they can take different values for different individuals (example age, weight , height, cigs per day, drinking) Observation- value of a particular individual for particular point in time. Data- a group of measurements and observations of an individual.
