Ex: native americans imitate animals that they may be hunting. Some dances last hours and some for days. Prewritten history: believed they have been dancing since prehistoric ages in tribal societies, evidence is limited but in cave painting, problem with anthropologists" studies of ancient people: they may not know much about dance. Dif cult to describe dance in words- it happens and then it"s gone. !1: dance traditions are vital in de ning what is important to a culture. Ritual dance- deep appreciation of tradition and sense of continuity and stability. *need to know de nitions of dance in the book (know 3 de nitions) Building blocks of dance: time, space, and effort (and body) For good luck, fertility, initiation (puberty), healing (to shaman)
