Uranium was discovered in 1789 and the science of atomic radiation was developed between 1895 and 1945. After the use of the atomic bomb during wwii, there was a focus on using nuclear technology to create energy. Prevents 5. 1 million tons of sulfur, 2. 4 million tons of nitrogen oxide and 164 metric tons of carbon from entering the atmosphere annually. Fission- uranium is divided up into smaller parts in a chain reaction. Fusion- hydrogens are added together to create energy. Natural resources (81%) radon, external and internal exposure. Man-made resources (19%) medical (x-rays, cat scans etc. Mixed waste due to hazardous chemicals and radioactivity. National security risk because the waste can be used to create nuclear weapons. Spent nuclear fuel: radioactive material in fuel rods after it is used to generate power. Waste with smaller amounts of radioactive material. Almost all nuclear waste is stored where it was generated. Sites are not meant for long-term storage.
