ECOL 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: National Environmental Policy Act, Environmental Policy, Adaptive Management
Document Summary
Environmental policy- a course of action adopted by a government or organization to improve the natural environment and public health or reduce human impact on the environment. Policies often cross political borders, meaning that they can impact multiple countries at one time. Wicked problems- problems that are complex that have multiple problems and consequences along with multiple stakeholders. Transboundary-problems that occur across state and national borders that require cooperation. Flexibility of policy to accommodate changes (adaptive management) Environmental policy in the united states dealt with how to best deal with resources. Environmental issues were primarily dealt with at the state level. Most environmental issues were only addressed after the fact and through litigation. As industry grew, pollution increased and crossed state lines. National outcry in the 60s and 70s lead to federal legislation. Performance standards determined how much pollution could be released. National environmental policy act (nepa) in 1969 established environmental policy.
