Living systems are not static; oikos = eco = home (study of homes of every living and how they live, grow, mature, have babies) Ecosphere thin shell with most of life; atmosphere (gases and particulate matter about earth), hydrosphere (all the water), lithosphere (soil and rock in earth"s crust and inner core) *everything is an ecosystem. 3 life zones: lower part contains 95% of air (troposphere), defined at scales, described and studied in absence of humans. Realm of ecology (organ to biosphere) individual, population, community, ecosystem; interaction between things and movement of things) Population: a group of individual organisms of the same species that interbreed and occupy a given are at a given time. Dynamic homeostasis systems adjust to reduce change from normal (negative feedback: reverses a directional change, positive feedback: system reinforces change) Limiting factor limits organism success; determines the yield potential (success in nature is determined by how many babies they produce)
