Chasing Coral Summary/Response
For  etra redit assiget, I athed the fil, Chasig Coral. I chose to watch this
film because I did not have any prior knowledge on the endangerment of coral reefs and was
interested in the topic. This film is about the coral reefs around the world and how they are
slowly fading away from the environment at a fast pace. Multiple divers, photographers, and
scientists from all over the world describes the reason on why the coral reefs are disappearing
while showing the beautiful underwater environment.
In the beginning of the film I was introduced to a London corporate executive who made
a living off of selling toilet paper. He wanted to see more of the world so started travelling and
ended up in Australia and started a new hobby and career of taking underwater photos. He
noticed that the coral reefs were disappearing and decided to make this film after getting the
ispiratio fro aother fil Chasig Ie hih is aout the aishig glaiers aroud the
world. At this point of the film, I was truly amazed at the visuals that were shown of the world
underwater and how beautiful it is. It made me truly realize how beautiful our world is and
seeing these beautiful sea animals and creatures opened my eyes and made me appreciate the
beauty of the ocean.
The film talked about the importance of corals and how they are the environmental
basis for the other organisms such as fish. It was stated that coral reefs were dying off in the
last three deades at a alarig rate. The eplaied a proess alled leahig hih is
when corals lose their vibrant and lively colors and transform into a white and pale color, which
signifies their upcoming death. The camera shows the corals from the lively colors into the
many bleached corals that are dying.
This is a very important sign of global warming and the deaths of the corals signify that.
It is stated in the film that about 93 percent of the temperature rise is absorbed by the oceans
and so the sea/oceans are the ones that have to deal with the irreversible damage. If this keeps
going and if the oceans keep dying slowly, this could eventually lead to the slow but definite fall
of the orlds eosste.
In the second part of the film, the film shifts their story to a college graduate student
who had a passionate love for the sea. He is passionate about the life under water and shows a
group of people gathered for a coral reef conference a variety of images of the dying corals.
This really stood out to me because I did not realize the extent of how much the environment
relied on the ocean and how many signs are being ignored. The film then talks about the
possibility of bringing the coral reefs back to life through the changes of our behaviors. They
begin by creating awareness, like this film, and talks about technology that could help decrease
the rate of the dying corals.
This film really spoke to me on many different levels and taught me that coral reefs are
vital organisms of the ocean that protect coastlines and provide shelter and habitats for many
other organisms living in the ocean. I really enjoyed watching this film and I was left with a lot
of knowledge about the environment under water.
