•Hareton: Hareton is the son of Hindley, Catherine’s brother, and Frances Earnshaw. He is
Catherine’s nephew and he is eventually given to Heathcliff after the death of Hindley.
Heathcliff raises his very roughly as if taking revenge for the mistreatment he received from
Hindley. He is illiterate but is very passionate and determined. Near the end of the novel, he
marries young Catherine. He is a protagonist and is static.
•Linton: Linton is the son of Heathcliff and Isabella. Linton is weak and only used by Heathcliff
to gain power over Thrushcross.
•Isabella: Isabelle is Edgar Linton’s sister who eventually falls in love with Heathcliff and
marries him. Blinded by love, she sees Heathcliff as a man who can love her but eventually
realizes that he will keep mistreating her. Heathcliff uses her as a tool in his revenge plan on the
Linton family. Heathcliff married Isabella to spite Edgar. She is a protagonist and is dynamic
because her love changes.
Point of View:
Wuthering Heights has two main narrators: Lockwood and Nelly. Nelly tells her story from what
she saw in the beginning of the whole story to the present. They both have biases in their own
story based on both of their interests and dislikes. Emily Bronte most likely used these two
different people as narrators because she wants to get out a message that it is hard to get the
truth. (This is prevalent in Gothic narrative novels.)
Themes:
•Revenge vs Forgiveness:
Revenge: Heathcliff seems to never find peace throughout his revenge. He plans his revenge on
Edgar and Catherine by marrying Isabella. However Catherine’s death proves that his revenge
did not bring him any kind of happiness or relief. Even though Heathcliff is haunted by
Catherine’s ghost, he is still obsessed with getting revenge. He tries to get Cathy away her father,
Edgar, by trying to force her to marry his son, Linton. It seems like Heathcliff never finds peace
until he gives up right before his death. Finally when he gives up his plan, he sees Catherine in
death and becomes happy once again. Catherine also takes revenge on Heathcliff because she
claims that he is her murderer because he caused her so much misery. Her revenge, even as a
ghost, is miserable because she wanders around Wuthering Heights to torture Heathcliff. Hindley
