Unemployment occurs when people are without work and are actively seeking a job. Unemployment rate measure the number of people actively looking for a job as a percentage of the labor force. The unemployment rate is a measure of the prevalence of unemployment and it is calculated as a percentage by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by all individuals currently in the labor force. More men were affected by the recession than women. The types of jobs women hold generally offer more stability although at less pay.

Another important measure of how an economy is performing is the unemployment rate. But there is more to the unemployment rate than just the headline rate reported on the news. In particular we are going to look at the U3 rate (the Headline rate), the U6 rate and the labor force participation rate.
