Central cities: main city which suburbs are formed around. Urbanized area: continuously built up area with buildings and population density with no reference to political boundaries. Metropolitan area: a large scale functional entity containing several urbanized areas that are integrated as an economic whole. Certain patterns and processes have produced the city we recognize today. Accessibility is a key function of urban organization, drives patters of land use and land value. People pay more to have access to the things they want: jobs, enmities. Central business district: most dense area, lots of transportation nodes- highways, surrounded by mixed land usage which transitions by type and value, downtown, most production and services. Congregation: the territorial and residential clustering of specific groups or subgroups. Some advantages of congregation exist for minorities groups: help preserve cultural practices, minimize conflict with outsiders, place for mutual support, establish a power base find a person to represent your group on a larger scale.
