GEOL 1250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Dune, Graded Bedding, Turbidity Current
Document Summary
Alluvial fan -rocks move quickly down a slope, fine sorting. Gentle slope on one side, steep slope on the other. Wind blows in varying directions, so the slopes try to switch sides. You can tell from the grain size and sorting. Sand dunes turn to rocks with climate change. Needs a still body of water where conditions change from rough to and calm to let the large sediments travel to the bottom faster than the smaller sediments. Big amounts of water that makes its way to the bottom of the ocean, sediments fall to the bottom dependent on grain size. Formed by evaporation of water full of ions. Change in composition of atmosphere from no oxygen to oxygen. Great oxidation event occurs and forms iron in water because of no oxygen in the atmosphere. Small change in concentration (ph) which causes carbonate to grow. Ions from minerals and glues sediment together.
