State: political organization which has bureaucratic organization, provides some public goods/ services, and centralizes the use of force: max weber"s definition of a state: has a monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory . Pre-modern state: had no sovereignty, defined boundaries, recognition, rule of law, public goods/service, centralized authority for force, little taxation, and few standing armies: presence of hierarchical system: Peasants: king had indirect rule over his kingdoms, peasants were subject to local authorities, authority was delegated to the church and nobility, riches were personal (belonged to the king) Modern state: has bureaucracy, impersonality, sovereignty, defined territory. Bureaucracy: form of organization in which members follow and enforce established, specific, and complex rules: are efficient and transparent. Impersonality: not closely related to the personalities of the state"s leader: members of the population are citizens with basic and equal rights.
