Conclusion and Discussion
After reviewing the research provided about the surveillance policies set post September
11, 2001, it is clear that the new changes and enactment of laws increased the ability of the
government to limit the privacy rights of American citizens. All of these changes in policy
proved that the government chose to enact legislation, even if it angered American citizens, for
the greater benefit of national security. While these acts did succeed in providing safety
measures in case of future terrorist attacks, national security took precedence over individual
rights.
One thing that stood out was that most of the literature and research showed evidence that
leaned towards the negative reactions of the changes made to surveillance policies. This showed
that research could have included some bias from the authors because of how they personally felt
about the new legislations. Because the issue concerning privacy rights is significant and found
to be very important to some citizens, the changes made were bound to result in negative
reactions because of the constitutional rights not being granted or made exceptions to.
Because this paper focused on the time frame of after September 11, 2001 and how
surveillance policies have changed, it would be useful to gather data on how effective those
legislations have been in preventing terrorist attacks and if the data from the new surveillance
was used more towards national security concerns or other criminal cases.
