Training is a big part of every law enforcement officer’s career. However, training agencies for
large scale demonstrations is considered a new but essential topic in order to successfully
manage demonstrations (Abbey, 2015, p. 103). Not only does the supervisors need to be
efficient, but the officers and subordinates also need to work together and must be efficient in
carrying out their individual roles. Allowing officers to train in this aspect ensures that each
officer knows how to control the situation and to decide how to handle the situation by assessing
what is going on at the moment. It will also be easier to make decisions because training will
also educate law enforcement officers on the policies of the police department and what is not
allowed. Training law enforcement officers to uphold the rights of civilians as well as keeping
everyone safe will lead to well management of demonstrations which eventually benefits the
police department as well as the civilians.
Demonstration management training should be conducted in a group setting in order to
promote teamwork and to practice what it would be like in the real-life situation (Herron, 2015,
p. 77). This is particularly useful because most police officers are used to working in groups of
very few people, but this will train officers to combine ideas and work together for the same
goal. Every officer should be well informed about the resources that are available in order to be
familiar with what they can use and how to use the resources during mass demonstrations. By
training with teams allows every officer to be familiar with what is expected from them and it
also allows officers to be accustomed to the signals given out by superiors.
Management of mass demonstration training should be added into the regular training
schedule of law enforcement officers instead of training once the mass demonstration is already
happening. This regular training is shown to be very effective in the 2003 FTAA. In preparation
