POUL 4060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ovulation, Egg Cell, Meiosis
Document Summary
Sex determination in avian species: female zw, male zz, female parent in avian species that will determine sex of offspring. Female has the heterogamemic sex (zw: 1st polar body is produced just before ovulation ~30-40 min before, 2nd polar body is produced after ovulation and typically after the ovum has been activated. Meiosis: haploid cells (half from female, half from male). Will have more daughter cells because going to haploid: pairing of duplicated homologous chromosomes. With ovulation, 1st polar body has been produced (about half hour before ovulation, we start meiosis and produce the first polar body). Rest meiosis (dormant phase, egg isn"t activated or continuing with meiosis). After ovulation, there is a 15 min window for fertilization where sperm will bind to sperm receptors, initiating the acrosome reaction. Sperm will eject their nucleus into the cytoplasm of the egg. Also need to increase metabolism because we will have cell division. Need energy to support reactions and support growth.
