POUL 4060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Yolk Sac, Weight Loss, Chorioallantoic Membrane
Document Summary
Water loss: function of # pores and shell thickness, more pores, easier to diffuse water, shell thickness plays large role. Critical in providing initial air when chick starts to hatch and starts to convert to respiratory lung based respiration. If lack appropriate air cell to start respiration, this is catastrophic, often resulting in a dead chick due to lack of oxygen. If too dry: weight loss too rapid, egg dries out, death or small feeble chicks, organs won"t develop properly, under developed kidneys, most die hatching, even if they survive, they will not live long. If too wet (don"t lose enough water: tissues are exposed to way too much water. If you are in a bath for a while, your skin is soft and flabby: small air cell, normal lung respiration doesn"t start when they start to hatch, with intervention, you can save the chickens. You can assist in hatching via opening the shell and giving them access to air.
