PSYC 3230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Discriminant, Inter-Rater Reliability, Biofeedback
Document Summary
Psychosocial factors contribute to physical disorders; therefore, we should be able to treat (or at least help treat) these disorders via psychosocial intervention. Chd=blockage of arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle. Chronic experience of negative emotion and neurobiological activation that accompanies these emotions. But we cant divide the world into just two types of people. Pain is cause of 80% of all visits to physicians; most common reason to see pcp. Yet the causes of chronic pain and the resulting enormous drain on health-care system are substantially psychological and social. Severity of pain does not predict reaction to it. Experience of pain can largely be disconnected from disease/injury. Differences appear to primarily result from psychological factors. In combination, these factors lead to active attempts to cope; less distress and disability. Process of making patients aware of specific physiological functions that they would not notice consciously, such as heart rate, blood pressure, etc.
